NUG vows to block revived Myitsone Dam, warning project sacrifices Myanmar’s "lifeblood" to China

Mizzima The National Unity Government (NUG) has issued a stern warning against the military junta’s attempts to restart the long-suspended Myitsone Dam project , characterized by NUG spokesperson U Nay Phone Latt as a desperate move to trade the nation’s “heart and lifeblood” for Chinese backing. Speaking on the “ Reporting to the Public and International Community ” program on 6 January 2026, U Nay Phone Latt declared that any international agreements signed by the “terrorist military junta” are legally void and that investors will be held solely responsible for any subsequent financial losses. The spokesperson detailed catastrophic environmental risks, noting that blocking the natural flow of silt would lead to severe soil degradation across the Ayeyarwady Region and allow seawater intrusion to destroy the agricultural viability of the Delta . Revolution Activities 

  • In Tilin, Kyauktu and Gantgaw townships of Magway Region, the junta army carried out aerial attacks. Reportedly, a man lost his life, a monk and a novice were injured and the monastery was damaged. 
  • In Myingyan Township of Mandalay Region, a combined force of Myingyan Black Tiger attacked the junta camp and a junta troop contingent on mobile patrol on January 6. Reportedly, 13 junta soldiers died and 2 others were caught alive. 
  • In Myaing Township of Magway Region, the junta army has conducted airstrikes constantly since January 4. Reportedly, there were casualties among civilians. 
  • In Longlone Township of Tanintharyi Region, there were frequent local battles between the junta army invading the area and the revolution forces within 50 days. Reportedly, there were a large number of casualties among the junta members including officers. 
  • In Shwebo Township of Sagaing Region, the junta army conducted aerial bombings for two consecutive days on Magyisu Area, where displaced people had been staying. 
  • In Shwe Pyi Thar Township of Yangon Region, the Blood Line conducted a grenade attack on the junta’s administration office in Ward (13). 
  • In Kyaikto Township of Mon State, there has been heavy fighting between the PDFs and the junta troop from Ka-Ma-Ya (3) under Regiment (44) in Theinzayat
  • In Salingyi Township of Sagaing Region, the revolution forces attacked a junta’s vessel streaming up the Chindwin River. Reportedly, 2 junta soldiers died and many others were injured. 
  • There was an attack on a junta convoy of the election commission and the police on their way out from Naypyidaw. Reportedly, 8 junta policemen, including Myothit Township Chief Police, died. 

Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) 

  • Kokang Special Region was reportedly established with four districts and a city by combining the townships under control of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, including Theinni and Kutkhine, which the military junta had been demanding through the support of China
  • On Wednesday, Kayan National Army conducted an opening ceremony of their headquarters office, along with the establishment of a new brigade. 
  • General Saw Nerdah Bomya, who had been removed from Karen National Union, established the Government of Kawthoolei and the Republic of Kawthoolei. In addition, he declared himself as President. Regarding it, there was some criticism. 

The Military Commission 

  • On Thursday, U Lwin Myint, a candidate from the People’s Party contesting the junta’ election, was sentenced to one year in prison with hard labour under the charge of the election campaign rule. 
  • In Hleku Township of Yangon Region, the candidates from the military-proxy Union Solidarity and Development Party met with the public from the Northern Darpain. 
  • On Wednesday, the junta’s Central Bank stated that 22 million USD would be sold to importers of fuel oil. 
  • Under Notification (2/2026), the Central Bank stated that only 15% of the export income, not 25%, must be exchanged in MMK. 
  • For the procedure of Rice Export Zone, 250,000MMK per acre will be loaned to farmers for the period of a crop season without any interest. 
  • The junta’s Minister for Immigration told former soldiers to contribute to the peace and stability of the country. 
  • The 2025 Film Academy Award Ceremony will be held at MICC (1) in Naypyidaw on February 7.
