NUG vows to block revived Myitsone Dam, warning project sacrifices Myanmar’s "lifeblood" to China

Mizzima The National Unity Government (NUG) has issued a stern warning against the military junta’s attempts to restart the long-suspended Myitsone Dam project , characterized by NUG spokesperson U Nay Phone Latt as a desperate move to trade the nation’s “heart and lifeblood” for Chinese backing. Speaking on the “ Reporting to the Public and International Community ” program on 6 January 2026, U Nay Phone Latt declared that any international agreements signed by the “terrorist military junta” are legally void and that investors will be held solely responsible for any subsequent financial losses. The spokesperson detailed catastrophic environmental risks, noting that blocking the natural flow of silt would lead to severe soil degradation across the Ayeyarwady Region and allow seawater intrusion to destroy the agricultural viability of the Delta . Revolution Activities 

  • In the northern part of Myaing Township in Magway Region, the junta army conducted an airstrike via fighter jet on Kyetmauk Village. Reportedly, a young woman lost her life and no fewer than 6 people were injured. 
  • In Minhla Township of Bago Region, the combined revolution forces attacked the junta’s inspection gate in Takale Village on the eastern side of Yangon-Pyi Road. Reportedly, there was heavy fighting and the military junta had to use aerial support. 
  • In Hakha Township of Chin State, the junta army conducted an aerial bomb attack on Halta Village on the midnight of January 4. Reportedly, 4 family members lost their lives. 
  • The Foreign Minister of the Philippines stated that the Philippines, the rotating Chair of the ASEAN, would keep committed to implementing the ASEAN 5-Point Consensus to help with  Myanmar’s affairs. 
  • On Wednesday, Kachin Human Rights Watch stated that 133 civilians lost their lives and 117 others were injured in Kachin State in 2025 due to the junta’s aerial assaults, heavy weapons and drone attacks. 
  • According to local residents, they have been concerned in case of any warfare in the town of Shwe Kokko, where Kyar Phyant online scams operate on Thai-Myanmar border. 
  • In Salingyi Township of Sagaing Region, there was an attack on a junta’s speedboat streaming up Chindwin River. Reportedly, 2 junta members died and many others were injured. 
  • In Kyaikto Township of Mon State, there has been heavy fighting between a junta troop of 102 soldiers from Ka-Ma-Ya (3) under Regiment (44) and the revolution force in Theinzayat. 

Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) 

  • In Tedim and Falam townships of Chin State, Chin forces have been attacking the junta camps and troops. Reportedly, the junta army has had heavy losses. 
  • On January 5, the Government of Kawthoolei stated that they had declared independence from the failed state of Myanmar and established an independent and free state named the Republic of Kawthoolei. 
  • Somewhere in Kayan Area, Kayan National Army conducted an opening ceremony of their headquarters and the establishment of new brigade on Wednesday. 

The Military Commission 

  • The junta’s Minister for Home Affairs said that legal action had been taken against over 300 people including 60 women under the law to protect the election. 
  • At Pyi Oil Field, the production has nearly stopped for over a decade and research is being conducted to promote the production of natural gas. Reportedly, the junta’s Minister for Energy inspected it. 
  • The junta’s Ministry of Economics and Commerce claimed that 566 inspection officers had been appointed to monitor the market for customer protection in the Union Territory, states and regions. 
  • The junta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs received a delegation led by Ms. Ma Theresa P Lazaro, Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar and Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines. 
  • On Tuesday, 32 foreigners, who had entered Myanmar illegally and who had been involved in online scams in Shwe Kokko, were handed back to their respective countries. 
  • The junta’s Ministry of Economics and Commerce stated that they had discussed to promote the export of farm and fishery products to Laos. 
  • The junta leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing discussed with Ms. Ma Theresa P Lazaro, Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair to Myanmar and Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, over the matters to promote  political, economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. Despite their propaganda, the visit of the ASEAN Chair was intended to urge the military junta to implement the ASEAN 5-Point Consensus which they had failed to follow.
