Rangoon (Mizzima) – After a change of ownership from the state to a private company, workers who had been living at a brick factory say they need a place to live after being told to leave by the new owners.
The Danyingon Brick Factory, formerly owned by the Ministry of Industry 2, in Insein Township in Rangoon has been sold to Mother Trading Company, placing the workers' living premises in jeopardy.
Company officials said about 30 worker families cannot stay at the factory any longer, so the workers have called on relevant officials to come to their aid.
“It’s important to have a place to sleep,” said Khin Mar Win, a female factory worker who lives at the factory.
According to worker rights activist Mar Mar Oo, an 88-Generation student member, the workers were told that they must move, said Mar Mar Oo.
“Both the organization that sold the factory and the company that bought it should bear responsibility, so I’ll meet with [the officials of] the Mother Trading Company that has ordered the workers to move, and I’ll tell them about the condition of the workers who have lost their jobs,” she said, in hope of arranging a compromise.
Zaw Oo from Zeekon in Pegu [Bago] Region, who worked at the brick factory for 14 years, said, “Even if we get sacked from the job, we want to live on this land. If they want us to move, we want them to arrange a suitable place for us because it is impossible to move to another place under our circumstance.”
