Mizzima awarded global JTI certificate for reliable news on Myanmar

Democratic nations ‘prosper’ Shwe Mann tells Singapore officials

Speaker of the Burmese Lower House of Parliament Shwe Mann met the acting president of Singapore and the prime minister on Monday to express appreciation for Singapore's support of Burma’s reforms and economic development.

Shwe Mann visited with President J. Y. Pillay, Prime Minister Lee Hsien and emeritus senior minister Goh Chok Tong for talks on Burma’s progress toward democracy and how Singapore officials can help the process.

Shwe Mann, who is seen as a key driver of Burma's recent democratic reforms, said, “We have learnt that those countries that practice democratic systems prosper... We would like to see prosperity take place in Myanmar too,” according to a story on the Straits Times website on Wednesday.

During the meetings, Shwe Mann discussed Burma’s draft Foreign Investment Law, which will be taken up in the next session of parliament based on recommended revisions by Burma’s President Thein Sein.

Singapore leaders offered to continue sharing Singapore's experiences in areas useful to Burma’s political and economic development.

Shwe Mann's  four-day official visit ends on Wednesday.
