The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) has pledged to work for human rights in Burma and in the Southeast Asian region in compliance with the Paris Principles, according to a statement it released on Tuesday.
The MNHRC made the pledge days after it was admitted into the South East Asia National Human Rights Institution (SEANHRI) as its 6th member at its 9th annual meeting held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Sept. 12-14.
The SEANHRI, which originally comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand, agreed in 2004 in Bangkok to carry out joint or bilateral programs and activities in areas of human rights of common concern and signed the Asean NHRI Forum Declaration of Cooperation in Bali, Indonesia on June 28, 2007.
The regional body was renamed as SEANHR Forum (SEANF) at its 6th annual meeting in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 2009 and its membership was extended to Timor Leste.
The general objective of the forum is to organize itself as a regional mechanism for the effective promotion, protection and fulfillment of human rights of the people in Southeast Asia, the statement said.
