Mizzima awarded global JTI certificate for reliable news on Myanmar

Thais who encroached on Burmese soil released in amnesty

Eighty-three Thais convicted of illegal entry and encroaching on Burmese land have been released as part of the Burmese prisoner amnesty on Monday.

Thai diplomats based in Burma are in Kawthaung Township, where they were imprisoned, have arranged for their return to Ranong, said a spokesman. They were expected to return to the southern province this afternoon, he said.

They were among 92 Thais found guilty in early July of encroaching and clearing land for cultivation.
