Mizzima Media will officially open a “new page” with the launch of a weekly print version of the Mizzima Journal in the Burmese language on Tuesday.

In 1998, three Burmese students living in New Delhi, India, started the Mizzima News Agency and distributed Burmese news via email free of charge.

From its humble beginning, based around Mizzima founder Ko Soe Myint’s laptop computer, the agency has expanded and grown to become a leading source of Burmese news recognized and trusted by the international community and readers around the world.

Mizzima News Agency believes that press freedom and democracy cannot be separated, and it has prospered through the help of its readers, donors and its dedicated staff.

“I have always been inspired by the golden age of Burmese journalism, and the words of its fearless leaders, which have guided me through challenging times,” said founder Soe Myint.

Starting early this year, most of Mizzima’s top editors and staff returned to Burma to work, while maintaining offices in New Delhi and Chiang Mai.

“We believe that we can play an important role in the national reconciliation processes and help develop the country by providing professional, impartial news,” said Soe Myint.

Mizzima managing editor Sein Win underscored the need for a free press in a developing democracy.

“We believe that all citizens should have relevant information so that they can governed themselves,” he said. “With the Burmese-language print journal, which has the capability to present unbiased stories, bold analysis and useful information, we can cut through all the spin to get to the truth surrounding important events.”

The Mizzima Journal will sell for 400 kyat (US$ 0.46 cents) per issue and be available in Burma’s largest cities and elsewhere, where many Burmese readers have no access to the Internet.

Mizzima hopes its Burmese and English readers will support our determination to provide high-quality print journalism in the Burmese language at this important moment in the country’s development.

Best Regards,
Soe Myint
