Rangoon (Mizzima) – The Myanmar Post and Telecommunication (MPT) has invited tender bids to supply more than 500,000 GSM SIM cards and 2.5 million WCDMA SIM cards, according to an MPT official.
MPT will buy the SIM cards in the domestic currency, the kyat. The tender period is August 2 - 17.
MPT will use the SIM cards to provide services for GSM and WCDMA domestic mobile phone users.
Tender forms can be bought at 1,000 kyat (US$ 1.14) at the MPT office on Bo Aung Kyaw Road in Rangoon.
To date, MPT has sold GSM SIM cards at 200,000 kyat per card and WCDMA SIM cards at 250,000 kyat per card.
Ko Ko Aung, a sale manager with Lugyimin Mobile Shop, said that GSM SIM cards have been widely sought recently.
An MPT official said, “Now it’s important to access the Internet. If the people living in rural areas can know rice prices and bean prices via the Internet, it’ll be very convenient for them. To provide data, ‘3G’ is the best. Most of International countries use 3G.”
Mobile phone users can apply for Internet service at MPT for about 10,000 kyat. The Internet usage fee is two kyat per one minute for a GSM SIM card and four kyat per one minute for a WCDMA SIM card.
