Mizzima awarded global JTI certificate for reliable news on Myanmar

PNLO to open liaison office in Taunggyi

In the next few days, the PaO National Liberation Organization (PNLO) will open a liaison office in Taunggyi, the Shan State capital, according to ethnic reports.

It will become the third armed group to have a contact office there. Others groups include the  Restoration Council of Shan State / Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) and Shan State Progress Party / Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA), according to a story Wednesday on the Shan Herald website.

The PNLO is the sixth member of the 11-member United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) that has concluded a cease-fire agreement during the past year. Others are the Karen National Union (KNU), Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), New Mon State Party (NMSP), Shan State Progress Party (SSPP) and Chin National Front (CNF).

Members that have yet to conclude cease-fire agreements are: Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), Arakan National Council (ANC), Palaung State Liberation Front (PSLF), Lahu Democratic Union (LDU) and Wa National Organization (WNO).

The PNLO and the Burmese government held peace talks in Taunggyi over the weekend and agreed on nine points, official media reported on Monday.

The agreement included setting up liaison offices, coordination on location of PNLO troops, cooperation in the fight against illegal drugs, media issues, food supplies, public security and basic agriculture, said the New Light of Myanmar, the state-run newspaper.
