US ‘sports envoys’ arrive in Burma

Tuesday, 28 August 2012 14:28 Mizzima News

US Ambassador Derek Mitchell welcomed four US basketball “sports envoys” to Burma this week, who will spend four days in the country “to emphasize the importance of academics, cooperation, and respect for diversity.”

The State Department program includes a Burmese native, Richard Cho, who migrated to the US and who is now the basketball team manager for the Charlotte Bobcats.

The group will conduct several sports workshops with local youths. It also includes Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Darvin Ham, former Women's National Basketball Association player Allison Feaster and former NBA player Marty Conlon.

As the first “sports envoy” exchange with Burma, the envoys will give workshops at local schools and sports facilities, and learn about the traditional Burmese sport, chin lone.

Basketball courts are a common fixture at private and missionary schools, but in Burma the sport pales in comparison to football.
