The development of Burma’s Dawei special economic zone will be the focus of a two-day trip to Naypyitaw by Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in September.
Foreign Minister Surapong Tohvichakchaikul said on Wednesday that Yingluck would meet with Burma’s President Thein Sein to discuss progress on bilateral cooperation following the signing of a memorandum of understanding in Bangkok in July.
Surapong said the joint development of the deep-sea port project in southeast Burma and the plan to connect the Dawei project to Thailand's Laem Chabang deep-sea port project would be the focus of discussions.
The Italian-Thai Development Company is the lead contractor on the Dawei project, and Thailand is a major financial backer of the infrastructure project.
The recent bilateral agreements on Dawei have sent a strong signal to foreign investment firms and governments that Thailand and Burma are committed to development of the strategic economic corridor designed to funnel energy and other material into Southeast Asia, significantly reducing shipping time and costs.
Meanwhile, the MCOT news agency reported on Wednesday that Thailand's leading developer and manager of factory estates, the Amata Corporation, is negotiating with partners to develop an industrial estate at a 200,000-rai site in Dawei.
Wiwat Kromadit, a senior construction manager for Amata Corporation Plc, said the company is talking with potential partners with expertise and investment interest in industrial estate development from Japan and China.
If completed, the industrial estate in Dawei would be the largest of its kind in the world, he said.
