Members of The Karen National Union (KNU) are hopeful that an August meeting will iron out the details of a cease-fire agreement with the Burmese government, following a meeting on Monday in Myawaddy.
The government and KNU representatives will hold a three-day meeting on August 27 in Hpa-an to discuss a “cease-fire code of conduct” between the two sides.
Naw May Oo, a KNU delegate, told Karen News that the third round of peace talks would also include the “sensitive issue” of negotiating the withdrawal of Burmese Army troops and camps based in Karen State.
Monday’s two-hour meeting was attended by the KNU General-Secretary Naw Zipporah Sein, Padoh Saw Thawthi Bwe, Naw May Oo and Saw Aung Win Shwe. Thme government delegation was led by Railways Minister Aung Min, Immigration Minister Khin Ye, Soe Thein and the Karen State Minister, Zaw Min.
In addition to the government delegation, “peace mediators” with links to the business and lobby sectors included Dr. Kyaw Yin Hlaing, Hla Maung Shwe, Tin Maung Than from Myanmar Egress Company, Ngwe Soe, Ko Ko Maung and his wife Ma Su from the Dawei Princess Company.
