Burma is considering a proposal to allow the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) secretary-general to assess the evetns surrounding the Rohingya Muslim ethnic group in strife-torn Rakhine State, according to Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.
Burmese Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin made the statement at a meeting on Tuesday with the Indonesian foreign minister, who said the idea of the OIC secretary-general’s visit was among the suggestions made by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Indonesia hopes Burma will be more open to the international community with regard to the Rohingya situation, said Natalegawa.
The Indonesian FM said he hoped Burma would open the area of unrest to the international community to directly observe the developments there.
Meanwhile, an aid effort for the Rohingyas is being undertaken by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, who departed for Burma on Wednesday, accompanied by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s wife and daughter, to deliver Turkish aid to Rakhine State.
The delegation will visit camps where Muslims have taken shelter and distribute humanitarian aid, said a report by Agency France Presse. The Turkish prime minister recently launched an aid campaign for Rohingya Muslims. Donations collected so far have exceeded $1.2 million.
