Villagers in southwest China's Yunnan Province rescued eight Burmese after a passenger boat overturned on the Mekong River on Sunday afternoon, said local port authorities.
Of the eight rescued people, one was an adult and seven were children.
Shortly after noon on Sunday, the Burmese-registered ship capsized just 10 meters after departing from a Burmese village port about five kilometres from Mengla County in Yunnan's Xishuangbanna prefecture, according to the Xinhua news agency.
There were about 25 people, mostly Burmese students, on board when the accident happened.
Guanlei villagers started the rescue with two civil ships.
