Canada’s new embassy in Burma will have a full-time trade commissioner, officials said.
President Thein Sein, in meetings with Canadian Minister of International Trade Edward Fast on Monday, said that the two countries have opened a new chapter through high level visits and renewed bilateral ties.
In mid-July, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced that Canada would open an embassy.
Canada suspended its sanctions against Burma in April.
The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, which is located in more than 150 cities worldwide, helps companies that are looking to export, invest abroad, and attract investment.
Trade between Burma and Canada is slight, a Ministry of Commerce official said, adding that bilateral trade amounted to US$ 4. 2 million in the fiscal year 2012-13.
Burma exported about $400,000 of mainly agricultural products to Canada and received imports of construction materials and other goods worth about $3.8 million U.S. dollars.
Canadian investment in Burma amounted to about $40 million as of June 2012, according to Myanmar Investment Commission data.
