A report on Canada-Burma relations, “Navigating the thaw: Burma-Canada Relations in 2012 and beyond,” has been released by Canadian Friends of Burma (CFOB).
The report advocates that Canada adopts a prudent and cautiously optimistic foreign policy towards Burma.
The report said that CFOB’s six policy pillars remain unmet, despite the changes taking place in Burma.
It said the removal of most Western sanctions appears to be premature in terms of principled concerns for human rights, democracy and conflict alleviation.
Moreover, it said advances made in Burma in regards to democracy and civil rights “remain shaky, wanting, and readily reversible.”
