Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – The dissolved Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF) that contested in the 1990 general election has been approved by Burma’s Union Election Commission (UEC) to register under a new name, the Mon Democracy Party (MDP).
Nai Soe Myint, a party central committee executive, said the UEC in Naypyitaw approved its request on July 10.
According to electoral laws, a party needs to submit a list of at least 1,000 party members within 90 days from the day of permission for registration as a political party. Nai Soe Myint said that his party is now preparing its list.
The MNDF was formed on October 11, 1988. Nineteen of its candidates contested in the 1990 general elections. It won five seats. In 1991, MNDF leaders were arrested and the party was dissolved on March 19, 1992.
If approved, there will be two Mon parties: the All Mon Region Democracy Party and the Mon Democracy Party.
