National League for Democracy members in Pegu have been told they cannot honour national hero Gen. Aung San on Martyrs’ Day on July 19.

Aung San, the father of NLD chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi, is considered the father of the country, and is traditionally honoured and respected across the nation.

The NLD members were told they could not assemble in front of a town statue commemorating General Aung San, according to an article by the Democratic Voice of Burma on Wednesday.

It said the members wanted to place wreaths in front of the General Aung San statue in the town’s centre.

Permission would be denied, said township authorities, because it would be a bad omen to lay wreathes in the centre of the town.
