Arakanese residents have put up an obelisk in a compound of Aungmingalar Sutaungpyae Temple in Sittwe to commemorate those who lost their lives during the sectarian violence in Sittwe, said San Kyaw Hla, a central committee member of the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party (RNDP).
The ceremony, held on Thursday was officiated by nine Buddhist monks and about 150 people attended including family members of people who lost their lives, RNDP members and members of various Rakhine organizations.
One of the monks who officiated said the obelisk symbolized the loss of life and residents can learn important lessons from the violence and avoid harmful actions.
On Sunday, a month after the violence, Buddhist flags were flown in Sittwe and other areas commemorating those who died in the violence, which claimed up to 79 lives.
