Dhaka (Mizzima) - Muslim leaders are being wooed to persuade community members to vote for the as-yet-unregistered Union Solidarity and Development Association party in the forthcoming elections by a Rakhine State township government chairman, a Muslim leader has said.
Aung Kyaw Oo, chairman of the Butheetaung Township Peace and Development Council, called six Muslim community leaders to his office on Sunday and asked them to mobilise Muslims to vote for the Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA), the Mawlawi (Muslim scholar or religious leader) said.

Dr Baw Shee, Tin Maung Win, Win Maung, and Khin Htay were among those who attended the meeting. The chairman gave each leader a paso (the traditional sarong, or longyi, worn by Burmese men).

Of the town’s 90,000 population, 70,000 are Muslim.

The USDA was a nationalist social forum set up by the junta in 1993. It was converted to a political party recently and is preparing to contest this year’s elections. But, it is yet to register with the Election Commission as a party.
