Suu Kyi to file case against relative

New Delhi (Mizzima) - Nobel Laureate and Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will file a law suit against Khin Maung Aye, one of her relatives, because he has been trying to sell some land in her current place of residence.

Kyi Win, her lawyer told Mizzima that she will file a case against Khin Maung Aye because he had tried to make the sale with the help of false documents to prospective buyers.

"Though news of a section of the land where her house is situated being sold was announced through newspapers in July last year by Khin Maung Aye, she could not initiate action because she was facing a trial in the bizzare case of US citizen John Yettaw intruding into her house and staying for two days," her lawyer Kyi Win said.

"We were discussing whether she shall file a case. If Daw Suu agrees to what we have drafted, we will submit it in court," he said.

Aung San Suu Kyi's mother Khin Kyi had lived in the house numbered 54 and 56 till she died in January 1989.

"Khin Maung Aye claimed that Khin Kyi had given him 170 feet of land. But later we heard that Khin Kyi threw him out of the house because she had only allowed him to stay temporarily. Khin Maung Aye is now claiming that he was given the land by Khin Kyi and therefore is trying to sell it," Kyi Win said.

"Khin Maung Aye has already taken some money from the buyer, a person supposedly from the literacy circle," he added.

Mizzima could not elicit a comment from Khin Maung Aye.

Former Prime Minister U Nu gave the house and the land to Khin Kyi, when she was the Burmese Ambassador to India in 1960. Suu Kyi has lived in this house since she came back to Burma in 1988.

US citizen John William Yettaw intruded into her house by swimming across the Inya Lake in May last year. And she was accused of flouting the laws of house arrest. Her house arrest period was extended for 18 months after junta supremo Than Shwe commuted it from a prison term of three years by an executive order.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for 14 years in the house.
