Bangkok (Mizzima) - Thailand's Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony of the National Blood Centre in Yangon General Hospital on Wednesday.

She was on a three-day visit to Burma at the invitation of the junta.

The project is supported by Her Royal Highness through Thailand’s Red Cross Society to develop the former Medical Science building to the new National Blood Centre of Burma. It has facilities for blood donation and laboratories. The Thai Red Cross has dispatched experts to provide training to Burmese staff.

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was on an official visit to Burma at the invitation of the Burmese regime from March 15 to 17. The last visit of the Princess to Burma was in 2003.

The Princess saw the Post Cyclone Nargis Recovery Projects in Irrawaddy and Rangoon Divisions. The projects are the Rural Health Centre, the Hospital in Daw Nyein Village, Kadonkani School and Cyclone Shelter. Currently, there are about 50 recovery projects underway in the Nargis affected areas which include storm shelters.

On Wednesday, Her Royal Highness spoke to Thai citizens in Rangoon about the Post Cyclone Nargis Recovery Projects through a broadcast by The Television Pool of Thailand.

“In the wake of Cyclone Nargis, Thai people from several sectors donated through the Thai Red Cross to assist Burmese people…(We) have experienced that development projects in Thailand for years and the condition of Thailand and Burma are not much different. So we cooperate in several sectors and work together,” Her Royal Highness said.

Cyclone Nargis lashed Burma’s Irrawaddy Delta and former capital Rangoon on May 2 and 3, 2008 causing massive destruction where at least 140,000 people died. Damages were estimated at over US$4 billion, making it the worst cyclone ever recorded in the region.

Her Royal Highness visited the country’s capital Naypyidaw on Monday and also visited places of interest such as the Uppatasanti Pagoda, Jewelry Museum and the zoo.

The Princess met junta supremo Senior General Than Shwe and discussed about bilateral cooperation on development projects to help Cyclone Nargis victims.

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn returned to Thailand on Wednesday.
