New Delhi (Mizzima) - This morning over 1,000 workers from Rangoon's Grand Royal Distillery Factory called on their bosses to give them better wages, public holidays and overtime pay.

This afternoon a staff person confirmed to Mizzima by phone that a company official from the International Beverages Trading Co. Ltd. (IBTC) was on his way to the distillery to negotiate with the workers.

The Grand Royal distillery located on U Shwe Yoe Street in Rangoon's Shwe Pyithar Township employs more than 1,500 workers.

Several garment factory strikes occurred in Rangoon last month and thousands of workers took part despite facing severe punishment. Strikes and independent workers unions are illegal in Burma, a country known for having some of the worst working conditions in the world.
