Burma has extended its 15-year drug eradication plan (1999-2014) for another five years, state-run media reported on Saturday.
Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) Chairman and Home Minister Lieutenant-General Ko Ko announced the extension in Naypyitaw on Friday.
Ko Ko called for realizing the objective of the "Asean Drug Free Zone" within the regional member countries by 2015, saying Burma is taking a leading role in fighting drugs and is increasing cooperation with local people, the private sector and strengthening coordination with UN agencies.
He stressed the need for education programs in schools, community-based anti-drug campaigns and drug abuse control programs to reduce drug abuse.
Ko Ko said the government punished 3,991 offenders in connection with 2,617 drug-related cases in 2011.
The authorities ceremonially burned seized narcotic drugs worth of a total of US$ 102.38 million in June this year, officials said.
In 2011, Burma’s anti-narcotic task forces seized about 6 million stimulant tablets and registered about 1,550 drug addicts, who were placed under treatment programs.
The anti-drug plan is in the third year of the final five-year phase before it was extended.
