The 3rd Sakai Peace Contribution Award, to be presented on Oct. 25 in Sakai, is awarded biennially by the city government of Sakai, Osaka Prefecture to individuals or organizations whose work promotes international peace. Suu Kyi will not be present to receive the award.

In 1985, 40-year-old Suu Kyi visited Japan accompanied by her second son, then an elementary school student. She spent nine months at Kyoto University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies, where she studied the history of Burma’s independence movement as a guest researcher.

In addition, the prize is being given to the Taiwan Red Cross Organization for its work in Japan after the devastating 2011 quake and tsunami.
