ILO removes restrictions on Burma

Thursday, 14 June 2012 13:14 Mizzima News

Most restrictions on Burma were lifted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) on Wednesday, making trading with European Union (EU) countries easier.

After reviewing the country’s recent steps in ending forced labour, the 101st International Labor Conference in Geneva adopted a resolution to lift all restrictions that were imposed on Burma in 1999 and 2000.

The resolution includes providing technical assistance to Burma and financial resources by member countries and organizations as the country undergoes rapid reform. Burma is now implementing a joint strategy with the ILO for ending forced labor ahead of a 2015 goal.

The Burma delegation included representatives of employers and employees and was led by Minister of Labor and of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Aung Kyi.

The ILO's lifting of most restrictions also came on the occasion of the first leg of a European tour by Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who arrived in Geneva on Wednesday to speak to the body.
