New Delhi (Mizzima) – German Deputy Foreign Minister Werner Hoyer, during a three-day visit to Burma, will meet with Burmese government officials and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
“I welcome the freedom of some political prisoners and recent changes. At the same time, many political prisoners are still in prisons, so I will [ask] the Burmese government to release them immediately,” he said on his website.
Hoyer will meet with Lower House Speaker Thura Shwe Mann, Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin and the opposition leader Suu Kyi.
A member of the Free Democratic Party of Germany, he said Southeast Asian countries and European countries should continuously exchange views on business relations and free trade between the two regions. He also visited Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.
In Indonesia, Hoyer met with Asean Secretary-General Surin Pitsuwan to discuss Asean relations with the EU and the Asian economic integration process.
