Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – Aung San Suu Kyi continues to make inroads towards a dialogue with the Burmese government. The latest appears to be an invitation to attend a national-level workshop on macroeconomics to be held in Naypyitaw.
The RFA Burmese service reported on a speech by Dr. Nay Zin Latt, a member of the Burmese president’s political advisory board, in which he said that Suu Kyi would be invited to attend the workshop.
National League for Democracy (NLD) central executive committee member Win Tin said that Aung San Suu Kyi had not discussed the matter with the NLD.
“While conversations cannot be held between the junta [the military-dominated government] and the NLD, she is trying to talk with them personally, I think,” Win Tin said.
Meanwhile, the dispute concerning the legal status of the NLD continues. Recently, Suu Kyi distributed an open letter asking government troops and ethnic armed groups to stop fighting and solve issues using peaceful means. The open letter signed by Suu Kyi did not mention the NLD by name.
Under the government led by President Thein Sein, two workshops on economic development in Burma have been held in Naypyitaw. The first focused on the alleviation of poverty and the second on adopting E-government solutions.
In the first workshop, economist Dr. U Myint, the leader of the president’s economic advisory board, presented a paper on “Reducing Poverty in Myanmar: the Way Forward.”
