The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed on Tuesday that it will resume visits to prisons in Burma as soon as possible.
Alain Aeschlimann, head of ICRC operations for East and South East Asia and the Pacific, said that the ICRC will assess the welfare and living conditions of the inmates and work on various issues related to prison management, in particular the prison health system.
He also said that the ICRC, together with the Myanmar Red Cross Society, is considering a “significant increase” in its involvement in Rakhine State.
“We are also waiting for authorization to carry out assessment missions in the border areas of Kachin and Kayin [Karen] and would be ready to conduct medical activities in these conflict-affected areas,” he added.
