Burmese authorities claim to have made a fresh round of arrests in Mandalay on Friday in connection with the ongoing protests by Buddhist monks and their supporters over a police crackdown at the Monywa copper mine site last month, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
“Some activists were arrested for questioning,” a police official told AFP, adding that they were arrested for staging a demonstration without permission.
The All Burma Federation of Student Unions, which took part in street protests this week, said eight people were arrested on Thursday night, of which four are still being detained, the report said.
