Switzerland opened a new embassy in Rangoon on Saturday, November 3, at a ceremony attended by Swiss Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter and Burma’s Finance Minister Win Shein.
Arriving in Burma on Friday, Burkhalter said that his country would increase development cooperation and humanitarian aid from US $11 million in 2012 to $20 million in 2013, and $35 million per year by 2016.
He invited 15 Burmese experts to receive further training on democracy, federalism and international human rights, and pledged $100,000 to assist the ancient city of Bagan in its restoration plans and efforts to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
