Swedish premier meets Thein Sein

Burmese President Thein Sein received a delegation led by Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt at the Credentials Hall of the Presidential Palace in Naypyitaw on Monday afternoon, the President’s Office announced.

The meeting was attended by Burma’s Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin, Ministers at the President Office Soe Thein, Aung Min and Tin Naing Thein, Minister for Commerce Win Myint, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Dr. Kan Zaw, departmental heads, and Sweden’s Ambassador to Burma, Klas Molin.

Independent news agencies reported that Sweden's Minister for Trade, Ewa Bjoerling, and a Swedish trade delegation, were also in attendance.

The President’s Office said the meeting “focused on cooperation and Swedish assistance for democracy, human rights and the rule of law, inter-governmental cooperation for improvement of human rights in Myanmar, sharing Swedish experiences, Swedish investments in oil, natural gas, rubber, wood, fishery and livestock breeding and further cementing friendship between the two countries.”

Swedish aid to Burma in 2011 was reported to be approximately US $18 million, most of which was converted into humanitarian aid as well as funds for human rights and democracy promotion projects.
