Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – A fresh attack was launched on the Mizzima Burmese website and access to the website denied on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of 8888, the day of the ‘People’s Uprising’ on Saturday.

“Yes, the Mizzima website (www.mizzimaburmese.com) was attacked again by what is technically known as a ‘DDoS’ (Distributed Denial of Services) attack. The server failed when numerous requests were sent to it simultaneously.” webmaster Ko Sai said.

The fresh attack was launched three days ago and the technicians responsible for the websites tried their best to maintain the website service But today, the attack was intensified and the server was totally down with all access to the website denied.

It is not yet clear who is behind this attack.

There have been similar attacks earlier. The only difference was the intensity- ome were big and some small. Total access denial cases took place twice. The first one during the 2007 September saffron revolution and again just after the 2008 May Cyclone Nargis.

The latest attack coincided with the 21st anniversary of the nationwide popular uprising, which had demanded a change to a multi-party democracy from the single-party dictatorial rule of then ‘Burma Socialist Programme Party’ (BSPP). Moreover it also coincided with the 11th anniversary of the foundation day of Mizzima News.

Over 3,000 people were believed to have been killed in the 1988 uprising and related incidents by the Burmese Army.

Meanwhile, the military junta has ensured a considerable slow down of internet speed inside Burma since Monday.
