Ruili (Mizzima) – The Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO), an ethnic armed rebel group in Northern Burma, on Monday observed its 34th Kachin Martyr’s Day at its headquarters in Laiza town on the Sino-Burma border.
The Martyr’s Day, also known as ShareShaGam in Kachin language, is the day when three KIO leaders including Lahtaw Zau Seng were assassinated. It was observed by different departments of the KIO.
A youth attending the ceremony said, “During the function, Kachin leaders recounted their experience in the beginning of the armed revolution. On August 10, 1975, three leaders including Zautu and Zau Seng were murdered.”
The present KIA chairman explained how the KIA leaders had struggled during the initial years of the revolution and held prayers for the martyrs.
“We held commemorative ceremonies like other years. And people attended from all departments. I don’t know exactly how many people attended,” a KIO official told Mizzima.
A Laiza television viewer said, the Laiza TV broadcast speeches of KIO’s former chairman Brang Seng, his meetings with the All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF) (Northern region) and records of the founding of the KIO.
On August 10, 1975 the chairman of the KIO Lahtaw Zau Seng along with Secretary Pungshwe Zau Seng, and military in-charge Lahtaw Zau Tu were assassinated on the Thai-Burma border Thang Ngawk Bum.
The three of them were among seven founders of the KIO, which was established on February 5, 1962.
