Suu Kyi offers to mediate ethnic conflicts

Tuesday, 12 February 2013 18:57 Mizzima News

Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has offered to help negotiate an end to conflicts between Myanmar government forces and the country's ethnic minority groups, according to a report by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The AP report said that Suu Kyi made the offer in a videotaped speech on Tuesday to members of her National League for Democracy party to mark Union Day.

The 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been widely criticized for failing to take a stand on ethnic issues and, in particular, for not speaking out against an alleged catalogue of human rights abuses by Myanmar forces in Kachin State and Rakhine State.
