Govt denies white phosphorous allegations

Sunday, 17 February 2013 16:54 Mizzima News

Myanmar’s presidential spokesman Ye Htut on Saturday dismissed an independent report by a group of lawyers that alleges security forces used white phosphorus in a crackdown on Buddhist monks and activists at the Latpadaung copper mine in November.

The lawyers say they sent a canister discovered at the site to a laboratory in Bangkok where it was found to contain white phosphorus.

But Ye Htut said that the government would only recognize a parliamentary inquiry currently being conducted by opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

“We do not study or give comment on individual inquiries,” he told AFP, adding that the report could “disturb” the work of Suu Kyi's commission.
