Chinese daily Global Times has reported that Beijing considered using drones to target Shan drug kingpin Naw Kham in his mountainous stronghold in northeastern Myanmar.

The Chinese government reportedly discussed assassinating the drug warlord who was accused of killing 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River in October 2011. They decided to capture him instead, the Global Times said, although he was subsequently caught and handed over by Laotian authorities in April 2012.

A New York Times articleby Jane Perlez on Wednesday said that the plan to use a drone “highlights China’s increasing capacity in unmanned aerial warfare.”
