Mizzima awarded global JTI certificate for reliable news on Myanmar

Burmese Union Assembly speaker backs down

Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – The Burmese Union Assembly Speaker Khin Aung Myint on Friday cancelled his own motion regarding sending bills approved by the Union Assembly suspected of not being in line with the Constitution to the Constitutional Tribunal to undergo scrutiny before being forwarded to the president for approval.

“The Union Assembly is aimed at leaving a good legacy and showing that it also takes the Lower House into consideration,” the state-run Newspaper New Light of Myanmar quoted Speaker Khin Aung Myint as saying.

On October 28, Speaker Khin Aung Myint made the decision regarding the Constitution Tribunal, but the move caused disagreement between the two parliamentary houses.

On November 1, Dr. Soe Yin, a member of the Parliament Rights Committee of the Lower House, submitted a motion “to appeal against and overturn Speaker Khin Aung Myint’s decision because it is not in line with the Constitution and parliamentary laws.”

House Speaker Thura Shwe Mann supported Dr. Soe Yin’s motion, saying, “The decision in the Union Assembly damages the reputation of the Parliament.”

On November 3, Speaker Khin Aung Myint told the Upper House, “Until the Union Assembly approves the motion, it’s incomplete, and so anyone who condemns the incomplete decision and the Speaker can be punished.”

He said that submitting the disagreement to the Union Assembly would not be allowed because it could question the speaker’s rightful decision.

However, the case came up again in the Union Assembly on Friday, leading to Speaker Khin Aung Myint to personally cancel his decision.

First ministerial meeting held

Mizzima Myanmar held the first meeting among newly appointed ministers after a recent major cabinet reshuffle by the military in capital city of Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday morning, according to a release from the Military True News Information Team Xinhua reported. The Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, acting President U Myint Swe and nine newly appointed union ministers were present at the meeting held at the Presidential Palace, the release said. Min Aung Hlaing unveiled plans to include reopening religious buildings and pagodas, resuming domestic travel and hotel businesses as well as industries in line with COVID-19 rules and regulations, and revitalizing the country's economy.

Indonesia detains British woman on terror suspect list
