Mizzima awarded global JTI certificate for reliable news on Myanmar

Bomb squad examines Shwedagon Pagoda

Rangoon (Mizzima) - Bomb squads are inspecting Shwedagon Pagoda in Rangoon six times a day before U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit on Thursday.

U.S. Embassy officials, military and civilian intelligence officers and the pagoda’s trustees have made extra security measures around the jewel-bedecked, golden pagoda. The religious site will offer her greatest public exposure during the visit.

However, authorities will allow the public to visit the pagoda at the same time as Clinton’s walkabout. Journalists, who can be expected to turn it into a major picture opportunity, will accompany her.

Earlier on Thursday, Clinton will be in Naypyitaw to meet separately with Burmese President Thein Sein, Burmese Foreign Affairs Minister Wunna Maung Lwin, and the speakers of Parliament and the Upper House.

On Friday, Clinton will meet with Aung San Suu Kyi at her house in Rangoon at 9 a.m. Fifty journalists will be allowed to cover the meeting.

Clinton’s Itinerary:
Wednesday
She will arrive in Naypyitaw by air around 3:30 p.m.
Thursday
At 9 a.m., she will meet Burmese Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin at the Foreign Affairs Ministry office in Naypyitaw.

At 10 a.m., she will meet President Thein Sein at the presidential office in Naypyitaw.
At noon, Burmese Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin will host a lunch for Clinton.

In the afternoon, she will meet separately with Upper House Speaker Khin Aung Myint and Lower House Speaker Thura Shwe Mann.

Around 4 p.m., she will arrive at Rangoon Airport and travel to Shwedagon Pagoda.
She will stay at the Chatrium Hotel in Rangoon.
Friday
At 9 a.m., she will meet with Suu Kyi at her lakeside home in Rangoon.

Later, she will travel to a Shan Library and the Shan Literature and Culture Department in the “Nine-Mile” area of Rangoon to meet with a gathering of Shan.

In the afternoon, she will meet with Burmese politicians at the U.S. Embassy in Rangoon.

Between 4 to 5 p.m., she will depart from Rangoon.

First ministerial meeting held

Mizzima Myanmar held the first meeting among newly appointed ministers after a recent major cabinet reshuffle by the military in capital city of Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday morning, according to a release from the Military True News Information Team Xinhua reported. The Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, acting President U Myint Swe and nine newly appointed union ministers were present at the meeting held at the Presidential Palace, the release said. Min Aung Hlaing unveiled plans to include reopening religious buildings and pagodas, resuming domestic travel and hotel businesses as well as industries in line with COVID-19 rules and regulations, and revitalizing the country's economy.

Indonesia detains British woman on terror suspect list
