New Delhi (Mizzima) – The Committee Representing People’s Parliament (CRPP) has said that it will cooperate with new government only after it releases all imprisoned political leaders, observes a nationwide cease-fire and enters a dialogue for peace with ethic groups.

“Our cooperation with them will depend on new developments. Registration as a party and contesting in the election will be the last stage,” CRPP Secretary Aye Thar Aung told Mizzima.

The CRPP was formed in 1998 by individual winners of the 1990 general election and 10 winning political parties including the Chin, Mon, Rakhine, Shan and the National League for Democracy. Earlier, the CRPP called for convening a parliament with the winning parties, which was ignored by the then-military government.

A CRPP member organization, the Zomi National Congress (ZNC), also said that it would reregister as a political party if the government showed significant and substantial change.

“We must consider re-registration and other issues if they really make changes, but we have not yet seen any changes in major issues in the Parliament,” ZNC chairman Pu Cing Tsing Thang said.

Halting the controversial Myitsone Dam project and the meetings between Aung San Suu Kyi and the new government are seen as progressive steps by the government but concrete steps to national reconciliation must still occur, sources said.

On Friday, Aung San Suu Kyi briefed CRPP members about her meeting with government liaison Minister Aung Kyi during its monthly meeting held at the Rangoon NLD office. CRPP Secretary Aye Thar Aung, Pu Cing Tsing Thang and NLD members Vice Chairman Tin Oo, Win Tin, Soe Win and Hla Pe attended the meeting.

“We agreed to continue our cooperation and to work together in all matters,” said Aye Thar Aung.

In the meeting between Suu Kyi and government representative Aung Kyi on September 30, the issues discussed included amnesty and a peace process with ethnic armed groups.
