New Delhi (Mizzima) - About 80 national members of the National League for Democracy (NLD) will not attend political science classes in Rangoon offered by leading regional academics after the professors canceled the classes citing scheduling conflicts.

The 8-day course, conducted by eight foreign professors, was set to begin on June 20.

NLD spokesman Ohn Kyaing told Mizzima the course will be rescheduled. It is part of a broad educational programme designed to energize the NLD cadre in Rangoon and across the country.

The coordinator for the training is Dr. Kyaw Yin Hlaing, an assistant professor of Asian and International Studies at the City University of Hong Kong, who would have been joined by professors from the National University of Singapore and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies.

Ohn Kyaing said the timing for the course also would have conflicted with the 66th birthday ceremony for NLD General-Secretary Aung San Suu Kyi and a music festival to mark her birthday.

The training supervisor, Kyaw Yin Hlaing, is a director of Myanmar [Burma] Egrass, which supported the 2010 election that was opposed by the NLD. Subjects would have included research methods, constitutions, legal theories and processes, cultural anthropology and principles of good governance.

Since Suu Kyi was released from house arrest on November 13, 2010, a series of training sessions have been given at NLD headquarters in Rangoon that included computer training, English language, journalism, agricultural principles, women’s activism and other topics.
