Rangoon (Mizzima) – Malaysia-based Maha Nan Restaurant will present a ‘Stars of the Century’ music festival in Malaysia and Singapore in early February. Fifty-two Burmese singers will participate in the festival.
At a press conference at the City Start Hotel in Rangoon on Friday, Than Naing, a singer in the band Playboy, told Mizzima: ‘This is the first big music festival of Burmese singers outside Burma. In the past, at most 15 Burmese singers could participate in a festival-in-exile’.
A music show will be held in Bukit Jalil indoor stadium in Kuala Lumpur and in the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) in Penang, Malaysia, on February 3 and 4, respectively. On February 5, a show will be held in an indoor stadium in Singapore, a festival organiser told Mizzima.
“At first, I thought we would earn a profit’, the festival organiser, Su Sandy Oo, said at the press conference. ‘But, now I see that we need to invest heavily for the festival. We are likely to lose financially. For the three shows, we need to invest a total of more than 2 million ringgit (about US$ 654,000)’.
Traditional Burmese music, pop and hip hop will be performed in the festival.
Singers Hinthada Tun Yin, Yazar Win Tint, Maung Maung Aye, Kay Tu Win Htut, Banyar Han, Phoe Thauk Kya, Paing Thet Kyaw, Cho Pyone, Soe Sandar Tun and Poe Ei San will perform with the Alinka Wutyi traditional music band.
Zaw Win Htut, Ringo, Chit Kaung, Bo Phyu, Marazza, Breaky, Htoo L Lin, Hayma Nay Win, Connie and Rebecca Win will sing with the Emperor band.
Myanmar Pyi Thein Tan, Playboy Than Naing, Bo Bo Han, Kaiser, Soe Paing, Khin Maung Toe, Khaing Htoo, Sai Sai Mao, Tu Tu, Nwelt Yin Win and May Sweet will entertain with the Aurora band and R Zarni, Zaw Paing, Han Tun, L Loon Wa, Hel Lay, Aw Ratha, May Khala, Sone Thin Pur, L Sai Zi, Wine Su Khine Thein and Chan Chan will sing with the Lazy Club band, along with the hip hop singers J Me, Sai Sai Khan Hlaing, Jout Jat, Thar Soe, Yone Lay, Sandi Myint Lwin, Jenny and Athens Cho Swe.
The festival will also arrange transport for music fans in order to allow Burmese migrant workers to attend the shows, according to organiser Su Sandy Oo.
Admission fees for the shows are 50, 100 and 120 ringgit in Malaysia and 50, 70 and US$100 in Singapore.
