Russia to deliver 20 MiG 29’s to Burma: Report

Wednesday, 23 December 2009 19:04 Mizzima News (New Brief)

New Delhi (Mizzima) - Russia has signed a Euro 400 million (US $ 570) contract to deliver MiG 29 fighter jets to military-ruled Burma, Russia’s state-owned news agency reported on Wednesday.

The Moscow-based Russia Information Agency - Novosti (RIA Novosti) quoting a source close to Rosoboronexport, Russia’s arms export monopolist, said the deal to supply MiG 29 fulcrum-D carrier-based fighter jets were signed a few weeks ago.

While the West, United States and European Union, continue to impose sanctions including an arms embargo on Burma, Russia and China has filled the gap and supplied military hardware to the junta, which has ruled the Southeast Asian nation for the past two decades.

According to an AFP report, Burma chose the Russian MiG 29 fighter jets despite China's offer to sell its latest J-10 and FC-1 fighters. Under the contract Russia will deliver 20 MiG 29’s.

The agency said Burma in the 1990s had bought US$ 2 billion worth of Chinese military aircrafts.
