India's finance minister, P Chidambaram, has proposed to link Northeast India to Myanmar by road as part of his 2013-14 budget.
The Hindustan Times reported that India's Look East Policy is beginning with Myanmar and that the Indian government is particularly keen on developing the India-Myanmar-Thailand highway.
“Multilateral Development Banks are keen to assist in efforts to promote regional connectivity. Combining the 'Look East' policy and the interests of the North Eastern States, I propose to seek the assistance of the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank to build roads in the North Eastern States and connect them to Myanmar,” said P Chidambaram, according to a report by The Times of India.
India is also working on other connectivity projects in Myanmar, which include an upgrade of the road that connects the Indian town of Moreh in Manipur to central Myanmar Ri-Tiddim road.
