The Singapore Red Cross Society is helping to finance a first aid station, complete with two ambulances, on the Yangon– Naypyitaw Expressway, according to a report by May Wong for Channel News Asia (CNA).
The highway is notorious as one of the most dangerous roads in Myanmar, many drivers ignoring the 100 km/p/h speed limit. The 397-km journey between the former and the current capitals usually takes about five hours.
“In the last 15 months alone, the highway saw over 140 accidents with about 20 fatalities,” the report said. “This is why the Singapore Red Cross has pumped in US $24,000 to help its Myanmar counterpart build a first aid post, complete with two ambulances.”
An official from the Singapore Red Cross Society told CNA that, in the future, if a driver witnesses an accident along the Yangon-Naypyitaw Expressway, he/ she can call an emergency number and an ambulance will be dispatched to the scene.
