Burma’s Ministry of Mines has agreed to drop its lawsuit against The Voice Weekly news journal, which published an article last year alleging that some government ministries, including the Ministry of Mining, were involved in misusing funds and misstating finances.

The Ministry subsequently filed a lawsuit in September against The Voice Weekly for defamation under Section 500 of the Burmese Penal Code.

Mediated between the Ministry of Information Ministry and the interim Press Council, the two sides have now reached a financial agreement to settle the case out of court.

The Rangoon-based journal’s Chief Editor Kyaw Min Swe confirmed that an agreement had been reached.

“Dropping the lawsuit is a win-win situation, which is very good,” he told Mizzima. “No one wins, but no one loses. And it is democratic solution.”
