Laos and Burma will next month begin building a “Friendship Bridge” across the Mekong River, according to a report in the Vientiane Times on Monday.

The bridge will provide the first road link between the two countries, and it is hoped that its construction will boost trade, investment and travel in the region, the report said.

Laos’ Minister of Public Works and Transport Sommad Pholsena led a Lao delegation to Burma for talks with his Burmese counterparts on January 8-10 to discuss details for the 660-meter concrete bridge, which will span from Laos’ Xiengkok river port in Luang Namtha province to Kainglap in Burma’s Shan State, Vientiane Times said.
