Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – A Kachin refugee was reportedly shot dead by Burmese government troops while he was going from a Kachin Baptist Church in Hpakant to his village on Friday morning, residents said.

Sa Ga La Aung, 21, who had sought refuge at the Kachin Baptist Church on Mawwan Quarter in Hpakant Township left the church around 6 a.m. to go to his village.

“Last night, he told his mother that he wanted very much to go home. This morning, he returned [to his home],” said Bwam Li, who works with refugees in Mawwan.

She said he was believed to have been killed in Tanekay before he arrived at his village of Hmawmaungbwam. There were no details of what happened, she said.

Villages found Sa Ga La Aung’s body after tensions eased  between Burmese government troops and the Kachin Independence Army.
