The first day of the first regular session of the third Pyithu Hluttaw was held 16 March, marking a significant milestone in the current legislative cycle. During the session, the leadership of the People’s Parliament was established through a series of uncontested nominations.

Khin Yi, the representative for Zayarthiri Constituency and current Chairman of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), was officially elected as the Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw.

His nomination was moved by Dr. Pwint San, the representative for Lawksawk Constituency, and seconded by Thein Tun of Pathein Constituency. Since no opposing candidates were put forward, the session chairperson formally announced Khin Yi’s appointment to the post.

In his inaugural greeting to the attending members of parliament, Speaker Khin Yi emphasized the importance of collective responsibility. He stated that while performing their parliamentary duties, representatives must prioritize the development of the interests of the state and the people, urging all members to work together in unity and cooperation.

Khin Yi brings a long and controversial history to the speakership, having previously ordered the bloody crackdown on protesters during the Saffron Revolution. He later served as the immigration minister in Thein Sein’s quasi-civilian government and held the same portfolio again within Min Aung Hlaing’s military junta cabinet.

The parliament also finalized the appointment of its Deputy Speaker during the same session.

Maung Maung Ohn, the representative for Tatkone Constituency who is currently serving as the Union Minister for Information, was elected to the position without opposition.

His nomination was proposed by Thet Pone of Sagaing Constituency and seconded by Hla Swe of Pobbathiri Constituency. With only one formal proposal submitted, the session chairperson declared Maung Maung Ohn the Deputy Speaker, solidifying the leadership team of the third Pyithu Hluttaw as it begins its first regular session.
