High-profile National League for Democracy (NLD) officials Dr. Myo Aung and Daw Moe Moe Su Kyi were released from prison on 2 March as part of a sweeping amnesty marking Peasants’ Day.

Family sources confirmed that Dr. Myo Aung, the former Mayor of Naypyidaw, and Daw Moe Moe Su Kyi, the former Minister of Immigration and Human Resources for the Yangon Region, were collected by relatives following the junta’s announcement of a mass pardon for over 10,000 inmates.

“Daw Moe Moe Su Kyi’s family is currently on their way to bring her home. Dr. Myo Aung has also been freed. His wife is on her way to collect him,” a source told Mizzima.

Dr. Myo Aung, a member of the NLD’s Central Executive Committee, had been serving a sentence of more than 20 years on five corruption charges related to land allocation in the capital.

Daw Moe Moe Su Kyi had been sentenced to eight years behind bars on charges involving the alleged misappropriation of 2020 election donations and a separate corruption case regarding a mobile phone gift. Both had been in custody since the first day of the military coup on 1 February 2021.

The Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) reports that while at least 324  political prisoners were confirmed released across ten prisons by Monday afternoon, the total list remains preliminary.

This amnesty, which cleared 7,337 individuals of political charges and dropped cases against nearly 12,500 more, is the most significant release of former government officials since the 2026 elections concluded.

However, as thousands remain in detention and top leaders like Daw Aung San Suu Kyi remain imprisoned, the PPNM continues to monitor the verification process at major facilities like Insein and Obo prisons to determine the true scale of the political pardons.
